The Delano Tigers bounced back from their first loss of the season in dominant fashion as they defeated the Foothill Trojans 50-29.
Quarterback DJ Huizar shined in his return to the field, throwing a staggering seven touchdowns passes along with 473 passing yards on 72% completion percentage. These statistics set records in touchdowns and yardage, making Huizar the single game record holder for the 106-year-old football program.
“Our offense showed we can move the ball through the air, but we need to finish drives, limit mistakes, and tighten up defensively. We’re proud of the effort and will keep building on the positives as we prepare for next week.” head coach Frank Gonzalez said following the win.
After a more-than-rough Week 3 performance against North High School, the Tigers responded in the best possible way, by posting 50 points of their own in a win that was never a remotely close game.
Delano jumped out to a 22-0 lead by the second quarter, then stretched it to a 29-point lead in the fourth quarter to complete the rout over the Trojans.
Aside from Huizar, wide receiver Hugo Rivas had 5 receptions for 179 yards and 3 touchdowns, while fellow receiver Raul Quezada had 5 catches for 172 yards and a touchdown.
Now looking to their Friday-night matchup, the Tigers have a chance to dominate a struggling 0-3 East high school team.
The Blades share their most recent matchup with Delano as well, having lost 31-0 to the same Foothill team that got dominated by the Tigers last Friday.
Expect the game to be blown open early, and for an offensive explosion to be on full display in front of a crowd full of alumni.
The legendary Gary Girard is set to be Delano’s grand marshal, spearheading one of the most exciting homecomings in recent memory.
